The Importance of Team Personalities in a High Performing Office

Here at Future Fitouts, we’ve been lucky enough to have experienced a lot of growth and success during our operation. We’ve even been nominated for a number of business awards too. But none of it would be possible if it weren’t for the amazing team we have working with us.

The personality of each team member has a significant impact on how your business runs day to day and its overall success. That’s why we want to delve into this topic a bit more so that you have all the information you need to experience just as much success in your own business.

How to Determine Staff Personalities

Hiring a new employee is a very important task that should be treated with thought and care. You’re bringing someone new into your business family, and along with wanting them to do a good job, you also want to make sure they’ll get along with everyone and fit in with your company culture.

But getting a full understanding of a person’s personality can’t be done by simply asking a few questions in an interview. Thankfully, a number of behaviour assessment tools can be used to help you out here.

DISC Personality Test

DISC is one of the most well-known personality tests in the world right now. Psychologist William Moulton Marston came up with this behaviour assessment based on four different personality traits. Animals have even been aligned with each personality trait so we can visualise them better.

The four personality traits are:

D – Dominance (Bull) – Fast paced, outspoken, questioning and sceptical.

I – Influence (Peacock) – Fast paced, outspoken, accepting and warm.

S – Steadiness (Sheep) – Accepting, warm, cautions and reflective.

C – Conscientiousness (Owl) – Questioning, sceptical, cautious and reflective.

Having a good mix of all personality types makes for a balanced and functional workplace. Want to know what personality type your or a colleagues fall under? A free online version of the DISC personality test can be found here.

Myers Briggs

Another famous personality test we have to acknowledge here is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Constructed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers, this personality test consists of 16 personality types. These personality types are used as reference points to help understand a person’s unique personality. Four preferences make up these personality types –

  • Ideas and information (Introversion or “I”) or people and things (Extraversion or “E”).
  • Possibilities and potential (Intuition or “N”) or facts and reality (Sensing or “S”).
  • Logic and truth (Thinking or “T”), or values and relationships (Feeling or “F”).
  • A lifestyle that is well-structured (Judgment or “J”), or one that goes with the flow (Perception or “P”).

We’ve found a very basic summary of this method in the image below, sourced from Wikipedia.  Understanding what specific personality type someone falls into can be a great start towards finding out if they are a good fit for your business.

How to Use These Tools To Form The Perfect Team

To get the most out of these tools, you first need to determine what the ideal personality type is for the role you’re hiring for. For a salesperson, you’re probably looking for someone who is extroverted and personable while a data entry tech will probably need to be more focused and have more attention to detail. Finding the right personality type for the job is just as important as finding someone who fits with the organisation as a whole.

It would help if you also thought about the other team members in your office. Will the new hire’s personality type complement or clash with others? Also, will they be the type of person to uphold and reflect your company values? After the personality test is complete, remember to score the person in all of these areas to make sure they’ll be the right fit.
