Closing for Christmas – What to Do in the Office to Start the New Year Fresh

While you’re probably busy working away right up to the day before Christmas break, don’t forget to step back and look at some simple tasks you should be doing in the workplace to start the year fresh.

Not sure where to start?

Here are a few ideas to kick-start your office preparations leading up to Christmas break, so everything is work-ready in time to head back to the office in the new year.

Inform Your Clients and Customers

Make sure your clients and customers are aware that your business will be closed over the Christmas break. Let them all know in advance when you will be leaving and returning to work so they have plenty of time to purchase your products or services and contact you about anything before the break.

You could put the word out on social media, on email or leave a message on the work answering machine to make sure your customers are fully informed.

Clean Up Your Desk

This should be a pretty obvious one, but don’t forget to clean up any junk on, under and around computer desks so that everything is clean and tidy when the new year rolls around.

Throw out or file any paperwork that’s been lingering on your desk for far too long, wipe down your mouse, keyboard, computer screen, phone and the surface of your desk and place any necessary day-to-day essentials neatly on your desk.

General Office Cleaning

After you’re done cleaning your desk, don’t forget about the rest of the office! Make sure reception areas, boardrooms, kitchens and breakout rooms are all neat and tidy. Anything that’s not part of the workplace should be removed and taken home, such as lunch containers for example.

Emails and Computer Files

The last few days of work can often be pretty slow for many businesses, making this a great time to clear out your emails and sort out your computer files. If you have a mess of files stored in odd places across your desktop with poorly labelled documents and folders, why not take some time out of your day to add a bit more organisation to your on-screen filing system?

You’ll thank yourself in the new year when you need to find everything again!

Filing / Archive Boxes

If your business has stacks of paperwork that you no longer need to look at but must keep on file, invest in some archive boxes. They can be purchased from most office supply stores or box stores. Make sure you label the documents and boxes with dates so they can easily be found again if you need them. As for any filing cabinets you’ll be using daily, take some time to go through them and make sure everything is where it should be.

Does your office have plants? Don’t forget to bring them home with you during the break or make sure they are watered well before you leave so they don’t wilt while everyone is away from the office.

Enjoy Your Christmas Break!

With all that out of the way, you can finally put your mind at ease and really enjoy the Christmas break!

Actually use this time to rest, relax, rejuvenate and pull your mind away from work completely, so that when you return to the office in the new year, you will be feeling fresh, uplifted and in the best mindset possible to get back into work.
